Receipt Rabbit

Dext alternative for one-person businesses: Receipt Rabbit vs Dext

By Pine River Labs, makers of Receipt Rabbit · Updated 2026-10-18

Dext is a bookkeeping document platform used by over 700,000 businesses and 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms that need multiple users, Android support, bank and supplier statement extraction, and connections to 36+ accounting and e-commerce platforms. Receipt Rabbit is a one-person iPhone app that reads and categorizes every line item on every receipt, splits business and personal items on the same receipt, and sends split expenses to QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Lunch Money. If you work with a bookkeeping firm, manage a team, or process bank statements alongside receipts, choose Dext; if you are a solo business owner on an iPhone who wants every receipt line categorized without paying per-document extraction fees, Receipt Rabbit is built for you. What line-item extraction costs on each

Most receipt scanners look at a store receipt and read one total at the bottom, but a single trip to a big-box store often mixes office supplies, client materials, and home groceries on one slip of paper. Reading each row on that paper slip and assigning it to an expense bucket is called line-item extraction.

In Dext, the default business plan ($302.50 billed annually, shown as $25.21 a month) includes 250 documents a month and 5 free credits a month for documents with line-item extraction. If you need line-item extraction on more than 5 documents in a month, Dext charges from $20.50 a month for a bundle of 50 documents, or pay-as-you-go from $0.50 a document. Dext describes line-item extraction as splitting a receipt line by line into cost codes, which are the expense categories in your accounting software. Its pages do not state whether each line can go to a different QuickBooks Online account (not stated on the pages we checked).

Here is our arithmetic from Dext's published prices: a business with 30 receipts a month that wants line items on all of them uses the 5 included credits, then pays for 25 more, which adds $12.50 a month at $0.50 each (or $20.50 a month for the 50-document bundle) on top of the $25.21 monthly plan price.

Receipt Rabbit reads every line on every receipt on both its Free plan (30 scans a month) and its Pro plan (300 scans a month for $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year, about $5.00 a month). Each line gets its own category from a fixed list of 42 categories in 11 groups, including a "Work & Office" group for business costs. Coupons, discounts, taxes and fees follow the receipt's main category so the totals add up.

Because solo business owners often buy work supplies and household items in the same checkout lane, one receipt in Receipt Rabbit can hold both business and personal lines. When you mark a line as a business expense, your Tax Profile maps it to a Schedule C category. (Schedule C is the IRS tax form where sole proprietors report business income and expenses.) As our founder put it when building the app:

"I created it initially with Lunch Money sync and personal users like myself in mind, but quickly realized that as a business owner it's way more useful and necessary. Expense tracking and reimbursement for small businesses and solopreneurs is woefully underserved: there are huge corporate solutions like Navan, Ramp, and Quickbooks Online but no solopreneur or small business wants to pay for all of that. So I created the app and use it to track my own business and personal spending carefully."

If you use QuickBooks Online for your full accounting, Receipt Rabbit Pro connects directly to it so you do not have to split mixed receipts by hand inside your books. You map Receipt Rabbit's categories to your existing chart of accounts (your list of QuickBooks accounts) once. Each receipt posts as one Expense with a separate line for each QuickBooks category on it and the receipt image attached. Unmarked personal lines go to a non-business account you choose once, and the Expense still posts the full total so it matches the card charge. QuickBooks then suggests the match to the bank-feed transaction (the automatic list of charges from your bank or card) and you confirm it.

Choose Dext if

  • A bookkeeper or accounting firm handles your books. Dext is built for firm collaboration and is used by over 700,000 businesses and 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms.
  • Several people need access. Dext's default business plan setting includes 5 users, with a slider to raise the allowance. Receipt Rabbit is for one user per subscription.
  • You need Android. Dext provides mobile apps for both iOS and Android, whereas Receipt Rabbit runs on iPhone only.
  • You want bank statements, supplier statements and other document types handled too. Dext includes 10 sheets of bank statement extraction and 5 supplier statement extractions each month alongside its 250-document allowance, plus GPS mileage tracking.
  • You use accounting software outside Receipt Rabbit's list. Dext works with Sage or another of Dext's 36+ integrations and over 11,500 banks.

Choose Receipt Rabbit if

  • You want every line on every receipt categorized on both free and paid plans. Receipt Rabbit reads and categorizes every line item on all 30 monthly scans on Free and all 300 monthly scans on Pro ($7.99 a month or $59.99 a year).
  • You mix business and personal items on the same receipt. You can mark business and personal lines on one receipt, map business lines to Schedule C categories, and send the split Expense to QuickBooks Online with personal lines booked to a non-business account you choose once.
  • You sync expenses to QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Lunch Money, or need a clean tax package for your accountant. On Pro, Receipt Rabbit syncs split receipts to QuickBooks Online, Xero, and Lunch Money, builds client trip expense reports, and exports one zip per tax year with every receipt image and a master spreadsheet with one row per line item.
  • You want an iPhone app with no account login and automatic privacy masking. Receipt Rabbit requires no sign-up or login, stores receipts in your private iCloud and iCloud Drive, and blacks out card numbers, member IDs, names, phone numbers and addresses before a receipt photo leaves your phone.

What Receipt Rabbit doesn't do

  • iPhone only. Receipt Rabbit requires an iPhone running iOS 18 or later from the App Store. There is no Android, iPad, Mac or web app.
  • One user per subscription, no approvals or team features. The app is built for one person and does not include multi-person approvals, company cards, or several users on one account.
  • No mileage tracking. Receipt Rabbit scans paper receipts, images, emails, and PDFs up to 10 pages, and does not log GPS mileage.
  • No bank or card connection of its own. Receipt Rabbit never reads your bank feed and asks for the QuickBooks Accounting permission only, never Payments, so it cannot move money. QuickBooks suggests the bank-feed match for you to confirm, and in Lunch Money, Receipt Rabbit finds the matching transaction already in Lunch Money and splits it by category.
  • QuickBooks Online, Xero, Lunch Money and the accountant export need Pro. The Free plan includes 30 scans a month, line-item categorization, a line-item spreadsheet of all receipts, and a zip of receipt images. You need the Pro plan to sync receipts to QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Lunch Money, build client trip expense reports, or create a tax-year ZIP export for your accountant ($7.99 a month or $59.99 a year).

Questions people ask

How does QuickBooks Online sync work in Receipt Rabbit vs Dext?

Receipt Rabbit posts each receipt as a single QuickBooks Online Expense split across your accounts by line item, while Dext connects to QuickBooks as one of its 36+ platform integrations. In Receipt Rabbit (Pro), you map the app's categories to your QuickBooks chart of accounts once, and choose whether receipts sync on scan or wait for your review first. Unmarked personal lines route to a non-business account you choose once so the Expense total matches your card charge. Dext splits receipts line by line into cost codes, and whether each line can go to a different QuickBooks Online account is not stated on the pages we checked.

Does Receipt Rabbit have a free plan, and how does email forwarding work?

Yes, Receipt Rabbit includes a Free plan with 30 scans a month and line-item categorization on every receipt. Email forwarding is included in Free. Forwarded receipts count toward your monthly scans, and you can also add receipts from the camera scanner (which finds edges, crops and straightens), Photos, Files, the share sheet, a stack of photos at once, or PDFs up to 10 pages. Dext offers a 14-day free trial with no card details needed to start, gives each user and account an Extract by Email address, and does not list a free plan.

How does Receipt Rabbit handle privacy and receipt storage compared to Dext?

Receipt Rabbit stores receipts on your iPhone and in your private iCloud Drive, and masks personal identifiers on the photo before it leaves your phone. Before a receipt photo leaves the iPhone, the app blacks out card numbers, member IDs, names, phone numbers and addresses. Receipt images are not kept on our servers after categorization. Where Dext stores receipts is not stated on the pages we checked.

Can I use Receipt Rabbit without connecting accounting software?

Yes, Receipt Rabbit is complete on its own without connecting any accounting or budgeting app. You can apply color-coded tags for projects, clients, trips or tax years, and search your receipts by store, category, date or specific item inside the app and from iPhone Spotlight. On the Free plan, you can export a line-item spreadsheet of all receipts and a zip of receipt images at any time.

How does Receipt Rabbit help with taxes and reimbursements?

Receipt Rabbit maps marked business lines to Schedule C categories and builds client trip expense reports and annual accountant zip files. When you mark a line as a business expense, your Tax Profile maps it to a Schedule C category. On the Pro plan, you can select the receipts from a client trip to build an expense report to send for reimbursement, or run the accountant export to generate one zip per tax year containing every receipt image and a master spreadsheet with one row per line item.
